BBC News

The operational news division of the British Broadcasting Corporation (BBC), responsible for gathering and broadcasting news and current affairs globally.

BBC News is an operational business division of the British Broadcasting Corporation (BBC), a public service broadcaster headquartered in London. It is responsible for the gathering and broadcasting of news and current affairs in the United Kingdom and around the world.

Scale and Operations

The department is recognized as the world’s largest broadcast news organisation. It generates approximately 120 hours of radio and television output each day, in addition to extensive online news coverage. The service employs over 5,500 journalists who work across its various outputs. This includes staff stationed in more than 50 foreign news bureaus worldwide, with over 250 foreign correspondents based abroad.

BBC News operates from the largest live newsroom in Europe, located within Broadcasting House in central London. Its domestic, global, and online news divisions are housed there. Parliamentary coverage is produced and broadcast from studios in London. Through BBC English Regions, the organization maintains regional centres across England and national news centres in Northern Ireland, Scotland, and Wales, which produce their own local news programmes and current affairs content.

Platforms and Distribution

BBC News provides television journalism to BBC network bulletins on BBC One and BBC Two, as well as the BBC News Channel, which is available both in the UK and internationally. In terms of radio, BBC News runs BBC Radio 5 Live, BBC Live News on BBC Sounds, and contributes to the BBC World Service as part of its rolling news coverage. Journalists and presenters also contribute to podcasts produced by BBC News for BBC Radio 4 and exclusively for BBC Sounds.

The division supplies news for other BBC radio stations, including BBC Radio 1, BBC Radio 2, BBC Radio 3, and BBC Radio 6 Music. It also provides national and international news for BBC Radio Wales, BBC Cymru Wales, BBC Radio Scotland, BBC Alba, and BBC Local Radio, although these entities remain editorially independent.
